WAMU: Changes To DCPS Special Education Services Pass Unanimously

WAMU reports the ways in which DC’s students will benefit from sweeping special education reforms, passed unanimously by the DC Council on October 7.

The story notes that the legislation will dramatically improve education for the 13,000 District children who have emotional, physical or learning disabilities:

“Only about 38 of our kids with special needs graduate on time. This is about a greater focus on making sure that they are set up to succeed and graduate,” Catania says. Judith Sandalow with DC’s Children’s Law Center partnered with Catania on the proposals. She says the District will expand eligibility for early intervention services to many more children. “I’m most excited about getting services to children younger and earlier,” Sandalow says.
