Making A Legacy Gift

Your planned gift shouldn’t just fit our needs – it should also work for your personal, financial and philanthropic goals. To become a member of our Legacy Society or explore what your planned gift could be, please contact Brian Shook at 202-467-4900 ext. 583 or bshook@childrenslawcenter.org.

Please note that Children’s Law Center does not dispense legal or tax advice. We encourage you to discuss any of the options provided below with an attorney, certified public accountant or other qualified financial consultant.

Bequest

Your will can include gifts in the form of: Cash, stocks, bonds, real estate or personal property. Your bequest designated to Children’s Law Center can be specified in your will, trust or estate plan as a specific amount, a percentage of what you will give or the amount remaining once you’ve paid your other bequests.

Sample Language for Your Will:

“I give to the Children’s Law Center, Inc. , a District of Columbia nonprofit corporation, headquartered in Washington, DC, the sum of $_______ (or___% of my estate, or the property described herein) to be used for _________________ (specify the purpose, like unrestricted funds, a specific program, etc.).”

Children’s Law Center’s Tax ID Number:  52-1961588

Our Legal Name: Children’s Law Center, Inc.

Retirement Savings

If you are interested in using your retirement savings to support Children’s Law Center, you can consider one of the following options:

  • You can name Children’s Law Center as a beneficiary of your retirement fund – all or just a percentage.
  • If you’ve reached the age where you need to take required minimum distributions (RMDs) from your IRA, you can donate that money to Children’s Law Center as a Qualified Charitable Distribution, which will be excluded from your taxable income.

Either can be arranged by contacting the administrator who oversees your retirement plan.

Retained Life Estate

If you deed a house or seasonal home to Children’s Law Center you and/or your spouse retain the right to live in the house for the remainder of your life. You receive an immediate income tax deduction for the gift. Children’s Law Center will most likely sell the property when you or your spouse no longer need it. Be sure to work closely with your real estate advisor, accountant, attorney and Children’s Law Center to establish your future gift.
