Testimony: Special Committee Oversight Hearing on Education After the Pandemic
Children’s Law Center Policy Director Sharra E. Greer testified before the DC Council’s Special Committee on COVID-19 Pandemic Recovery and the Committee of the Whole about the need to prioritize supports and services that students need to equitably access public education in the next school year. To close the achievement gap and meet the needs of DC’s most marginalized students, we recommend the Council, DC Public Schools and DC Public Charter Schools leaders prioritize ensuring digital equity; funding individualized supports; changing attendance and engagment regulations; creating a DCPS Virtual Academy; investing in compensatory education; and meeting the behavioral health needs of our children through the expansion of the School-Based Mental Health program and socio-emotional learning supports.
