Testimony: The State of Special Education and Disability Services in DC’s Public Schools
Senior Policy Attorney Renee Murphy testified at a public roundtable before the DC Council’s Committee on Education regarding the state of special education and disability services in DC’s public schools.
In her testimony, Renee discussed several heartbreaking outcomes for students with disabilities in DC’s public schools, including abysmal academic performance and graduation outcomes, and highlighted problematic issues that lead to these poor outcomes, such as the public schools’ lacking capacity to meet the variety of special needs. She also called on the DC government to commit to funding the 2014 Special Education Legislative Reforms, supported unanimously by the DC Council, in the upcoming Fiscal Year 2018 Budget.
