Makia’s Refuge
For Makia Weaver, childhood was a difficult time.
She and her siblings were removed from a relative’s home and separated from one another in foster care.
That’s when Children’s Law Center got involved. Makia needed a lawyer to fight for her – including supporting her goal of going to college.
“My lawyer always motivated me to keep studying, to not allow my situation to get the best of me,” she says.
Makia, who helped emcee the 2016 Helping Children’s Soar Benefit, found refuge in school. She followed her dreams to the University of Virginia and then to law school at American University. Now she clerks for Judge Anna Blackburne-Rigsby at the DC Court of Appeals.
