The Chronicle of Social Chance: CLC’s Judith Sandalow Explains Lawyer’s Role in Juvenile Dependency Court 101 Article

The Chronicle of Social Change asked Children’s Law Center’s executive director Judith Sandalow about the role of lawyers who represent children in juvenile dependency court. As guardians ad litem, CLC attorneys represent the best interests of children in court. Representation begins with an investigation to learn as much as possible about a child’s situation and the circumstances that brought him or her to court. Sandalow notes that bringing a child to court to be directly involved in the proceedings is not always in his or her best interests, and lawyers must make that decision on a case-by-case basis.
