Fox 5: Family of girl with severe lead poisoning faces homelessness

Tragedy struck when the Luster family learned their daughter had severe lead poisoning, despite an inspection deeming their apartment safe. Now there’s another hurdle: Homelessness. Experiencing discrimination by landlords upon finding out the Lusters use housing vouchers, the family has been unable to find safe, stable housing. Fox 5 DC spoke with Children’s Law Center’s Executive Director Judith Sandalow about what the Lusters, and families like theirs, face. 

“According the Children’s Law Center, the real problem is a systemic violation of the law no one is enforcing.

“It is against the law to refuse housing to someone based on their source of income and that law is in particular to protect low income families who have government vouchers,” said Children’s Law Center Executive Director Judith Sandalow.”
