NPR/WAMU: The next hottest rental strategy? Market to housing choice vouchers

March 20, 2023

DCist/WAMU reporter Morgan Baskin provides an in-depth look at the real estate companies that target rent-stabilized apartment buildings for redevelopment and then market them toward renters in DC Housing Authority’s voucher program. The real estate owners are taking advantage of the scarcity of deeply affordable homes and turning into a profit opportunity, often forcing DC’s lowest income families to live in squalor.

Children’s Law Center Director of Special Legal Projects Kathy Zeisel speaks about the increased role DC agencies must play to track and enforce negligent landlords in the audio portion of the story, “We’ve testified a number of times in the context of rapid rehousing, that the city shouldn’t be putting our public money with landlords who are repeated violators.”
