FY22 Budget Testimony: DCRA
Children’s Law Center Senior Policy Attorney Elizabeth Oquendo testified before the DC Council’s Committee of the Whole, urging the Committee to redirect any funding increases to DCRA’s budget toward instead funding a new Department of Buildings. Time after time our clients have suffered the health-harming effects of living in terrible housing conditions — without any significant help from DCRA. That’s why we thank the Council for passng the Department of Buildings Establishment Act of 2019 and taking bold action to override the Mayor’s veto of the bill. Now, we ask the Council to ensure the Department of Buildings is fully funded in DC’s FY22 budget and able to carry out the meaningful inspections and enforcement that will help protect the District’s children and families from unhealthy housing conditions.
