FY22 Budget Testimony: OAG

June 3, 2021

CLC Senior Supervising Attorney Kathy Zeisel submitted testimony to the DC Council’s Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety expressing our positive partnership with the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) in pursuit of healthy housing for all DC families and urging the Council to fund and grow the OAG’s ability to do even more meaningful housing code enforcement work. Children’s Law Center has successfully partnered with the OAG throughout the last year on issue areas including improving housing conditions for low-income tenants in multi-unit buildings with some of the most egregious housing violations. We have benefited from the knowledge, skill and compassion shown to our tenant clients by OAG staff, particularly the Social Justice Section’s Environmental Justice Unit, whose focus on lead issues in DC homes is critical since lead exposure in children can cause irreversible harm. Additionally, we commend the Civil Rights Section for investigating and prosecuting source of income discrimination cases, as well as broader housing discrimination issues.
