FY22 Oversight Testimony: Child and Family Services Agency

February 17, 2022

Children’s Law Center Supervising Policy Attorney Tami Weerasingha-Cote testified about the Child and Family Services Agency (CFSA)’s performance during DC’s oversight proceedings. As Tami noted in her testimony, this past year, in many ways, marks the start of a new chapter for CFSA, and we appreciate the agency’s greater engagement and partnership. Still, the agency must do more to resolve persistent issues like finding stable and appropriate placements for foster kids and ensuring their access to behavioral health services.

Additionally, we support CFSA’s long-term vision focusing on keeping DC families together whenever possible and safe for the child. But we also urge the agency to improve its prevention work by increasing transparency, communication and accountability in relation to safety planning (diversion) and child fatality reporting.

Children’s Law Center Senior Attorney Megan Conway also testified at CFSA’s performance oversight hearing in her capacity as a member of the Citizen Review Panel for Child Abuse and Neglect.
