Testimony: Advancing Equity in Special Education Protocols Amendment Act of 2024

November 20, 2024

Senior Policy Attorney Danielle Robinette testified before the Committee of the Whole regarding B25-0847, the Advancing Equity in Special Education Protocols Amendment Act of 2024 and oversight of the provision of education of students with disabilities in the District. The bill identifies two important areas of inequity encountered by students in self-contained classrooms – feeder pattern continuity and student-to-teacher ratios. While we are in full support of the bill and how it addresses the ways in which the District can better meet the needs of students with disabilities, we do have recommended amendments that we believe will strengthen the legislation.

Our Impact on Children’s Education

Too often the District’s schools fail to provide students with physical, learning or emotional disabilities or children living in poverty with the right supports they need to succeed. We work with parents and schools to get a child’s education back on track – from ensuring testing for learning disabilities at a young age to making sure students with disabilities have an appropriate plan that meets their learning needs.
