Testimony: Department of Behavioral Health Oversight (FY16)
Policy Director Sharra Greer testified before the DC Council’s Committee on Health & Human Services regarding the Department of Behavioral Health’s (DBH) FY 2015 performance. In her testimony, she highlights many challenges DBH faces in embracing its role as the leading mental health authority for the children of the District; however, she acknowledges the short time DBH’s new leader, Dr. Tanya Royster, has had to assess and develop a plan for reform.
Some of the challenges highlighted include:
- An incohesive mental health system for children due to lacking collaboration among District agencies;
- Little to no assessment of the appropriateness, length or effectiveness of the mental health services being received by children; and
- The consistently poor quality and timeliness of mental health services that DC children receive.
