FY15 Budget Testimony: District of Columbia Public Schools

Children’s Law Center testified at an April 17, 2014 budget hearing regarding the Mayor’s FY15 budget for DC public schools (DCPS). More information about the hearing is available on the Council website.

Executive Director Judith Sandalow testified to support the proposed FY15 funding for special education – which is reduced somewhat overall as a result of projected enrollment reductions, but is actually increased on a per-pupil basis under a new student funding formula. Children’s Law Center also urged DCPS to invest more in several budget areas that are missed opportunities to support the District’s vulnerable kids, including transition services for older youth (including vocational and life skills training), school-based mental health programs, bullying prevention, and support for homeless youth.
