Testimony: Expanding Fee Waivers for Low-Income Litigants Act of 2021
Children’s Law Center Senior Supervising Attorney Kathy Zeisel testified before the DC Council’s Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety about the Expanding Fee Waivers for Low-Income Litigants Act of 2021, which would simplify the fee waiver process and eliminate an unnecessary barrier to access to justice. We strongly support the bill and further ask the Committee to make two additional modifications to the bill that would: 1) include the Close Caregiver Subsidy in the category of presumptively eligible benefits, and 2) expand the types of transcripts that litigants with fee waivers may access without cost.
