Testimony: Office of the State Superintendent of Education Oversight (FY16)
Executive Director Judith Sandalow testified before the DC Council’s Committee on Education regarding the Office of the State Superintendent of Education’s (OSSE) FY 2015 performance. OSSE is the State Education Agency for the District of Columbia, and nearly all children Children’s Law Center serves attend DC public schools – whether traditional public schools, charter schools, or nonpublic special education schools funded by the District.
In her testimony, Judith highlighted a number of OSSE’s achievements, including:
- The expansion of the DC Early Intervention program, which served hundreds more children than it did a few years ago;
- The release of the first annual report of the Community Schools Incentive Initiative; and
- OSSE’s continued collaboration with the Department of Behavioral Health to implement a number of programs to identify and provide services to students with behavioral and developmental health needs.
Additionally, her testimony elaborates on areas needing improvement, including special education reforms; special education capacity; special education transportation; and school attendance and culture.
