Testimony: Office of the State Superintendent of Education Oversight (FY17)
Senior Policy Attorney Renee Murphy testified before the DC Council’s Committee on Education regarding the Office of the State Superintendent of Education’s (OSSE) FY 2016 performance. OSSE is the State Education Agency for the District of Columbia, and nearly all children that Children’s Law Center serves attend DC public schools – whether traditional public schools, charter schools, or nonpublic special education schools funded by the District.
In her testimony, Renee highlighted a number of OSSE’s achievements, including:
- OSSE’s public engagement strategy for creating the school accountability rating system for public schools, as a result of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA); and
- The establishment of a new Transportation Advisory Council, consisting of parents, parent representatives, and schools, which is tasked with providing recommendations for program changes.
Additionally, her testimony elaborates on areas needing improvement, including special education reforms; special education capacity; special education transportation; and school attendance and culture.
