Testimony: Pre-K Student Discipline Amendment Act of 2015

On February 4, 2015, Judith Sandalow, executive director of Children’s Law Center, testified at the Committee on Education’s hearing on the Pre-K Student Discipline Amendment Act of 2015. She testified in support of the Act as a good first step in dismantling DC’s school-to-prison-pipeline.

Ms. Sandalow urged that the Act be expanded to include children in kindergarten through twelfth grade, to give all children the opportunity to stay in school and have the chance to succeed. Her testimony supported ensuring pre-kindergartners remain in classroom, highlighted the negative impact of suspension on older students, and the need for a more inclusive bill that implements the types of positive school discipline we need in DC.
