Testimony: Amendments to the Compulsory Education and School Attendance Regulations
Children’s Law Center Policy Attorney Leah Castelaz testified before the DC State Board of Education (on behalf of Attorney Danielle Robinette) regarding a proposed emergency rulemaking that will amend DC’s school attendance regulations.
Every day, we work with children and families who face barriers to regular school attendance, and we support the emergency rulemaking as a first step toward the necessary overhaul of DC’s attendance regulations. We appreciate Office of the State Superintendent of Education’s quick work in presenting these regulations and hope they will: 1) minimize the punitive consequences for students and 2) improve schools’ abilities to target supports to those students facing the greatest barriers to attendance.
