Testimony: The State of School-Based Athletics in Public Schools

Senior Policy Attorney Renee Murphy testified before the DC Council’s Committee on Education regarding the state of school-based athletics in the District’s public schools. In her testimony, she highlighted the disparity faced by the clients of Children’s Law Center, in their chances to participate in sports and other extracurricular activities. She followed this by discussing the important benefits gained by children, especially children with disabilities, who can participate in athletic activities and other extracurricular activities. To close, Renee called attention to the barriers these children face to participate in organized activities outside of school and offered recommendations to increase their inclusion.
